ORVIS HYDROS SL V FLY REEL : 9-10WT

The Orvis Hydros SL V will be the perfect match for any 9-10wt fly rod used for steelhead, salmon, to bonefish, permit, and smaller tarpon on the flats. At 8.4 oz, this reel will balance any of today's lighter weight fly rods. Orvis Hydros SL Fly Reels are machined from bar-stock aluminum and feature a buttery-smooth drag startup and a narrower spool both increasing line pickup while reducing line stacking. The lightweight frame and spool, fully sealed drag, and best-in-class line pickup per revolution make the Hydros SL one of the best reels for the money in durability, drag system, and weight. From trout to saltwater flats, the Orvis Hydros SL will match any fishing application and has the stopping power for larger species.

So I've been an off-and-on flyfisherman for the better part of the last 20 years. I've typically always gone with budget gear, and without much shock to anyone, it typically didn't last more than a few seasons. It's okay when you fish maybe once or twice a year and aren't spending more than a C note on a rod and reel. Plus, freshwater typically isn't THAT demanding on your gear. But when I finally took the plunge and decided to invest in a proper saltwater setup, I knew I was going to have to be very deliberate and quality-conscious about how I spent my money. This was especially the case for whatever I chose for a reel because if a big drum or striper decides to run off with your line and most of your backing, the drag is going to be what stops that freight train. And on top of that, it's going to have to be able to do it while soaked to the bone in saltwater. Fortunately, it really didn't take much consideration or research: Orvis has the solution (Shocking, right?) I spoke with a couple locals and there was always a consensus; 'You can't go wrong with an Orvis Hydros SL'. So I ordered one and strapped it on to a TFO Mangrove in 9wt and hit the inshore... Let me tell you, I've only put about 15 hours of time on my Hydros, and only put a handful of fish on it, but it's barely broken a sweat in that time. While past, less solid reels might have at least shown a little weakness at the end of a fight or when it's time to clean up, the Hydros just powers through, smooth as silk. My understanding is that it's got around 14 lbs at full drag and the drop-off is predictable and easy to dial in. The drag knob itself is small enough to be out of the way, but still large enough to be convenient. I cast righty, but retrieve on my left and it's certainly never been an issue thus far. On top of that, it's not a small reel. In fact it dwarfs the BPS in-house reel it's replacing. The large arbor means it can retrieve line quickly and easily while letting my strip it off without too much issue. It reels line in smoothly and there's just enough baseline drag that backlash isn't even in my vocabulary anymore. Spool changes are quick and easy, though the small switch can be tricky with gloves on. All in all though, it feels incredibly solid and well built. Despite being a fairly large reel, it's not particularly heavy, without looking anemic. Overall, this reel is absolutely worth every dime. It's got the crazy orvis warranty, the quality of construction you expect, and the performance is top notch. If I have any complaints, it's the small size of the spool disconnect. But that's not enough to make me not want to replace every one of my reels with an Orvis Hydros. Just get one and stop worrying about your saltwater gear!
