The cult classic Orvis Superfine has a new look in 2022. After the departure of the previous model, the market lacked a mid-priced glass rod that packed some serious performance. The newest iteration of the Superfine is ready to hit the market with a splash and our Pro Staff has certainly taken notice of this rod because of a recent outing during which we were able to put the rod through its paces against some serious trout.
The new Orvis Superfine Fiberglass fly rod is constructed from S-2 glass which gives the rod some of the best power and strength that we see among contemporary fiberglass fly rods. This new construction gives these sticks phenomenal accuracy, nearly unprecedented power seen in glass rods, while still retaining that classic bend and action that makes fiberglass rods so popular among modern anglers.
Performance
The ReelFlyRod recently took the 6'6" 2wt Orvis Superfine out on a recent trip to chase some trout. We paired the rod with a RIO Lightline DT2 and found that for especially soft presentations this was a great match for trout that are particularly spooky. For any angling that needed a little more 'oomph' and punching power we bumped up to a true-to-weight 3wt line and were able to competently cast some larger dries and nymph rigs without feeling like we were overloading the rod.
Both the 6wt and the 8wt feel like they are going to be some of the hardest to keep in stock here at the shop because they are likely to gain a cult following with anglers that target bass or those who like to take glass for light saltwater duty against redfish and snook.
Closing Thoughts
The new Orvis Superfine gets huge marks from our Pro Staff. We feel like there are not many rods out there that retain the feel of a glass rod but are still able to pack some extremely consistent and powerful performance. There are great possibilities for the Orvis Superfine because it covers to many applications, from small streams, panfish ponds, warmwater rivers, all the way to light saltwater.
