I recently bought this rod and was very happy to see how it performed for a 3 day long backpacking trip on the Olympic Peninsula. It held up well and I was able to maneuver down into tight streams and still get a good cast off. Not sure I totally understand why a 3 wt needs a drag system on the reel - could lose the drag and become a lighter set up. But overall I am happy with my purchase and it is worlds better than the Encounter.

Started with the Orvis Encounter. Then got this. WAAAAY better. Love this setup. Bought my son the same rod, but went with a Battenkill Disc 1 from a Orvis store this weekend. He loves it.

Wow I ordered the Orvis 3wt Clearwater combo and the backing fly line and leader were assembled and ready to fish. I just need to add a fly and I was hooked up with a brown and soon after a rainbow.

I initially had purchased an Orvis Encounter 5wt-8'6". While it wasn't the end of the world to learn on, this 3wt-7'6" is much, much easier to handle. Very easy to maneuver. Seems to be a high quality set up, while not having to spend a grand on it. $300-$500 is a perfect price point for these set ups. I'll probably move on up to a Hydros reel and Clearwater 5wt rod to replace my Encounter. Great Price, Great Quality.

Purchased this fly rod for small stream fishing. The action of this rod is perfect for nymphing in tight stream fishing conditions. This outfit was set up completely. Just put it together and everything is there for you to tie your flies on and be ready to fish!
