Scott Fly Rods has been handcrafting and tirelessly advancing the performance of freshwater and saltwater fly rods for the last 45 years. As a long-time Scott Fly Rod dealer ReelFlyRod has seen the growth and progression of Scott rods and fished the different generations along the way.
Scott got its start making fiberglass rods in the 1970s and quickly expanded to lead the way in the graphite rod revolution. They invented the 9-foot 4wt rod and have continued to stand out with superior craftsmanship as we've entered into the modern fly fishing era. Scott's commitment to perfection is seen in the performance of every single fly rod that they make. On the freshwater side, the Scott Centric leads the industry as a versatile fast action rod that's often the one we grab on the wider Midwest rivers that we fish. The Scott Flex offers a fast action at an affordable price point and the G Series is a smooth, medium action rod that combines presentation, finesse, and power in an all new design. In the saltwater arena, the Scott Sector is considered by many to be the finest saltwater rod ever made. This powerhouse of a rod casts tight loops effortlessly and delivers flies with unprecedented accuracy, regardless of which way the wind is blowing. Every rod is hand crafted in Montrose, Colorado, and covered by Scott’s Unconditional Lifetime Warranty.
Scott Centric Fly Rod Review
Cutting edge Centric series fly rods deliver new levels of stability, recovery speed, and range, while giving anglers tons of feedback through the easy flexing tip sections and highly transmissive blanks. When you pick up a Scott Centric, you immediately notice that the rod is super light in the hand. At the end of a long day pounding streamers along the bank, you’ll notice less fatigue and that the last cast of the day was as easy as the first. New ARC2 and resin technologies are the main two contributors that allow this to happen. The improved resins create a stronger fiber connection allowing the rod to be more accurate, rebound quicker, and increase fishing performance. Advanced Reinforced Carbon (ARC) is a material that Scott has been using while building their rods for many years. ARC2 is a new generation material that is 35% lighter than its predecessor. Basically, it’s an additional scrim that is used to increase break strength and creates stability allowing for light weight construction of the rod walls. Stronger, lighter, and better overall performance is the result. After spending some time fishing Centric rods, these attributes became readily apparent. The Centric rods are the most efficient rods Scott has ever created. Flat, stable, high line speed loops are easily generated at any distance with minimal effort from the caster. For anglers of any skill level, these rods feel very light in the hand, are insanely accurate, and are simply a joy to fish at any distance.
Scott Centric rods are fit with Flor grade cork, new titanium stripping guides with super slick zirconia inserts, new low glare Snakebrand Universal snake guides, and a new fully milled reel seat featuring speed threads, easy grip knurling, self-indexing hoods, micarta inserts, a special Delrin lock washer, and type 3 flat black hard coat.
Centric rods retail for $895 and are available in models ranging from 8’6” to 10’0” in line weights 4 to 7. All Centric rods are 4 pieces and come in an embroidered cloth bag and premium aluminum rod tube. Scott Centric rods are handcrafted in the USA from the finest materials.
Scott Sector Fly Rod Review
The Sector is Scott’s answer to ‘what is the best saltwater rod ever made?’ These wonder rods leave us in awe and wishing for nothing. They cast with the ease of the beloved Meridian Series, but boast 10-15% more power in the butt and mid-sections. The Scott Sector is the your best choice for flats, inshore, offshore and beach fishing. They cast equally well from short to very long distances, pick up line easily for quick 2nd and 3rd shots, and possess tremendous bottom end strength for the end game. Equipped with the highest quality components of any rod on the market, the Sector is the complete package. The Sector even improved upon our favorite Meridian rods, the 8, 9, and 11-weights. If you’re hitting the flats, the Sector is the rod you want in your hand.
Scott G Series Fly Rod Review
Scott G Series is an all-around, extremely versatile fly rod. While it is considered a medium-action rod, the G Series possesses amazing ability to cast both short and long in addition to its sweet spot in the mid range. The G Series has a lively, progressive action, flexing consistently even based upon the amount of line being cast. If you prefer fast action rod, then pick up a Centric as your all-purpose rod. G-Series are the most finely tuned graphite fly rods on the market and beat out the Centric when casting shorter distance, roll casting, line mending and tippet protection. If your casting style is not well suited for today’s modern fast-action rods, you’ll fine the Scott G Series is the sweetest, smoothest rod that will become your all-time favorite.
Scott Tidal Fly Rod Review
If the price of the Sector gives you anxiety, the Scott Tidal Series fills is more than capable of getting the job done. The Tidal Series are serious saltwater fly rods, and will compete with any saltwater rod on the market in this mid price range. We’ve fished the 7, 8, 9 and 10-weights and can vouch for their cast ability and ability to generate high line speeds and tight loops. They don’t have the same power in the butt section as the Sector, and you’ll give up a bit of reserve power to drive flies into the wind, but make no mistake, Tidal rods are more than capable of getting the job done well. Scott did a great job of incorporating their signature “feel” in these mid-priced rods, which is considered a premium from any other rod maker. The Tidal Series is a perfect choice for anglers whose budget may prevent them from getting both a high end saltwater rod and reel, or for those occasionally saltwater anglers that only get to fish the salt a few times each year.
Scott Flex Fly Rod Review
Scott Flex fly rods deliver a great price to performance ratio and really stand out for the way these rods fish. The Flex rods 854-4, 904-4, 855-4, 905-4 and 906-4 are medium-fast action rods that sacrifice nothing in on-the-water performance. As you would expect, these rods are less “refined” than their $800 competitors in both cosmetic appointments and the micro relationship between the four parts of each rod. As compared with a comparable G Series rod, a Flex may catch all the same fish, but will do so without the precision and refinement of the G. Scott Rod Designer Jim Bartschi prioritized function over form with the Flex. As a result, even accomplished anglers will smile when the cast or fish one.
The Flex Series offers a broad lineup of models. The middle of this lineup (4-6wt) deliver excellent on the water performance. Scott Rod Designer Jim Bartschi designed these rods specifically for function and feel, and these rods stand out in the mid-price range.
Scott F Series Fly Rod Review
The Scott F Series is a highly specialized creek rod that cast better than any rod on the market at short distance. The Scott F will cast with only the leader out of the rod tip, and the precision placement of these little gems is uncanny. The longest rod in the series is only 7′ 2″, so they are precision tools to work over, under, and around brush, trees, and other obstacles in tight confines. The F Series open to playbook to every type of cast you invent out of necessity to get the fly into impossible spots where trout love to hide. The F-Series feels like a small toy in the hand and is more fun for small creeks and stream than any rod we’ve ever fished. When you coax a strike in that small pocket water, you won’t be able to wipe that smile off your face.
