R. L. Winston Rod Company was founded by Robert Winther and Lew Stoner in 1929. The company’s name is a combination of the founder's names: R from Robert, L from Lew. Early Winston rods were made from Bamboo, a classic style at the time. Eventually Winston made the transition from bamboo to fiberglass to graphite. Today, Winston builds state-of-the-art boron graphite rods. Winston Green has become a company trademark rod blank color and stands for Winston’s superb craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Winston Rods are hand-built in Twin Bridges, Montana, which is in the heart of some of the world's finest trout fishing regions. Their rods are the product of over 85 years of die-hard anglers and fly rod innovation. Their history and company culture is ingrained in each rod they produce to create the perfect balance of progression and tradition, which transcends into a distinct feel that is unmatched in the rod building industry.
In the 1990s, Winston revolutionized fly rod building with the invention of a boron/graphite composite, leaving traditional fiberglass and graphite blanks in the dust. Now on their third generation of high modulus boron, Winston's BIII models are some of the lightest, durable and high performance fly rods in the world.
The first thing you notice about a Winston rod is how much thought has gone into its presentation, from the handwritten model specification on the tube cap to the quality cream rod bag. The whole production speaks of craftsmanship and luxury. The emerald green blanks are precision wrapped around nanolite stripping guides and polished chromed snake guides. The cork handle is finished with a burled box elder wooden reel seat and nickel silver butt cap. These are premium, hand crafted rods that any angler would be proud to own.
Pick up a Winston, and you’ll be holding a rod with a flawless finish, precisely aligned guides, a perfectly formed grip, and a reel seat made from the finest components. Fish with one, and you’ll experience superior performance, as well as the remarkable feel that comes from a rod that’s lightweight, balanced and smooth. We know that anglers have many fly rods to choose from, but when the goal is to own the finest, there can only be one.
