R. L. Winston Rod Company was founded by Robert Winther and Lew Stoner in 1929. The company’s name is a combination of the founder's names: R from Robert, L from Lew. Early Winston rods were made from Bamboo, a classic style at the time. Eventually Winston made the transition from bamboo to fiberglass to graphite. Today, Winston builds state-of-the-art boron graphite rods. Winston Green has become a company trademark rod blank color and is synonymous for Winston’s superb craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Winston Rods are hand-built in Twin Bridges, Montana, in the heart of some of the world's finest trout fishing regions. Winston’s rods are the product of over 90 years of die-hard anglers and fly rod innovation. Their history and company culture is ingrained in each rod they produce to create the perfect balance of progression and tradition, which transcends into a distinct feel that is unmatched in the rod building industry.
In the 1990s, Winston revolutionized fly rod building with the invention of a boron/graphite composite, leaving traditional fiberglass and graphite blanks in the dust. Now on their third generation of high modulus boron, Winston's BIII models are some of the lightest, durable, and high-performance fly rods in the world.
The first thing you notice about a Winston rod is how much thought has gone into its presentation, from the handwritten model specification on the tube cap to the quality cream rod bag. The whole production speaks of craftsmanship and luxury. The emerald-green blanks are precision wrapped around nanolite stripping guides and polished chromed snake guides. The cork handle is finished with a burled box elder wooden reel seat and nickel silver butt cap. These are premium, hand-crafted rods that any angler would be proud to own.
Air 2 - The next generation of all-around freshwater fly rods (3wt-6wt). These rods can do anything – present tiny dry flies to wary trout on flat water, cast a heavy streamer to the far bank in the wind, launch the entire line when you need it, and make quick, accurate close-range shots. From high stick nymphing, pounding the banks from the boat, or wet wading, the new AIR 2 is a pack rod, a travel rod, a beautiful rod, and an all-around rod. It’s the new Winston. When you can only bring one rod…the amazing new Boron AIR 2.
Pure - When you daydream of delicate presentation trout fishing, where does your mind wander off to? Some might imagine casting yellow humpies, stimulators, and Royal Wulffs on their favorite freestones. Some might imagine undercut banks, beaver ponds, and giggling riffles on a secret cutthroat “crick.” Some might imagine a large pod of picky spring creek rainbows dimpling PMDs on a slow-moving current’s surface. If these are your daydreams, we encourage you to explore our all-new PURE series of trout rods.
Air Salt - The Saltwater AIR series is very light and allows for unprecedented fast recovery, for any length of cast. Combining Winston’s proprietary SuperSilica lightweight resin system and Boron III material with modern progressive tapers, Winston Saltwater AIR rods deliver the celebrated Winston “feel”, along with balanced, fast graphite recovery rates, for incredible line speed and presentation, making them our most versatile rods in saltwater environments. What this means for anglers is faster mid-sections to dictate line control and easily manage windy conditions along with Boron III technology applied in the butt section for more lifting strength to fight and land fish quickly.
Alpha+ - A Winston rod series designed to up your game against the Alpha fish lurking in the shadows. Carnivorous trout, thrashing bass, toothy pike and musky, jungle species like peacock bass, golden dorado and arapaima, and huge saltwater species like giant trevally and Tarpon. Pure and simple, these rods are for any fish that require extra-large fishing tools no matter the water type. With wicked fast action, ALPHA+ rods have been designed to cast aggressive rigs – including big flies, heavy lines, shooting heads and sinking tips. These rods will cast these big rigs further with minimal false casts and effort.
Air Two-hand Spey - Featuring a deep loading action with fast recovery rates, AIR TH models are ideal for any steelhead and salmon fishing application. They showcase adaptive and specified grain windows that are ideal for specific two-hand applications. In addition to the dialed grain windows, AIR TH models utilize smaller diameter grips to give anglers more feel and intuition during the cast. AIR TH rods adjust to any casting style and preference by utilizing several standardized rod lengths across multiple grain windows. In the same way the 9’ rod length became the industry standard for a versatile single hand rod, we’ve dialed in our famous 13’3” lengths in 6, 7, and 8 weight grain windows to specify the perfect rod length across different applications.
Boron III TH Microspey - Winston’s innovative BORON TH MICROSPEY rods combine the power of a Spey rod and the finesse of a trout rod to add a new and exciting dimension to the sport. Featuring Boron III technology, these fast action rods excel in a range of Two-Handed situations, from covering big, broad rivers to dealing with tree-lined banks or demanding weather. They have a specialized grip that feels more trout rod than Spey, use slightly larger chrome guides than typical trout rods, and come with a larger tiptop that allows for the larger diameter of the spey style lines.
Boron III Super 10 - Boron Super 10 rods have been specifically designed for fishing applications that require more reach, perfect presentations and better long-rod balance. With a down-locking reel seat, the rod balance moves into the grip, providing more connection to the blank and less perceived swing weight. This provides more sensitivity to the angler to detect soft strikes. The rod’s shooting guides allow for slick, smooth mends. Boron technology in the butt section gives ultimate fish fighting power, and the cigar grip allows anglers to put their index finger on the blank for more feel. From high-stick nymphing, float tube fishing, stack mends or long drift dry fly presentations, Boron Super 10 rods give anglers the most leverage from drift to drift. Pick up a Winston, and you will be holding a rod with a flawless finish, precisely aligned guides, a perfectly formed grip, and a reel seat made from the finest components. Fish with one, and you will experience superior performance, as well as the remarkable feel that comes from a rod that is lightweight, balanced, and smooth. We know that anglers have many fly rods to choose from, but when the goal is to own the finest, there can only be one.
