The Orvis Encounter II Fly Reel is attractive, rugged, and most importantly, has a beefy drag system. These reels are constructed to take plenty of abuse and still perform smoothly. Encounter reels feature a large arbor design to retrieve line faster and help keep line memory free.

Easily converted to either left or right-hand retrieve, Encounter fly reels have a positive click drag knob for consistent settings every time. Whether you're looking for your first large arbor, fishing on a budget, or want a spare or two in the bag, the new Encounter II Large Arbor can handle anything a machined reel can, and is a great performance value in entry level reels. Orvis Encounter is a perfect choice for an affordable reel with an excellent drag system.

    • Attractive, durable composite frame and spool
    • Large arbor for fast line retrieval
    • Powerful disc drag system
    • Easily converted to either left or right-hand retrieve
    • Positive click drag knob for consistent settings every time

Orvis WF floating fly lines are built a half-size heavier to provide extra help loading the rod, casting larger flies, and handling the wind. A compact head helps to transfer energy more efficiently, load the rod in close, throw tighter loops, and turn over flies. This is the perfect choice for the newer fly fisher or those anglers that don't mind making casting a little bit easier.

    First Fly Rod
    Marc (Tyler, TX) | October 21st, 2020
I bought this as part of a full setup and I have loved it so far. Great rod for a beginner but I think it will last KE a good while. Orvis is a known and respected name so I spent a bit more for my first outfit.

I bought this set up based on a recommendation from a friend. I’m a complete novice and I’ve used this set up a few times now. Comes with everything you need to get going, couldn’t be happier with the performance for the price. Would recommend

Excellent First Rod & Reel Setup
    Donald C. (Georgia) | August 17th, 2020
I joined a veterans Fly Fishing group looking for a new adventure in retirement. I have been fly fishing and attending fly fishing workshops for one year. During this time the fly fishing group allowed me to use their equipment, until I was sure what I needed. I am very satisfied with the quality and performance of the equipment, the price point and the call in customer service. Although, it is not the desired weight for bass fishing, I caught bass immediately upon receipt of the gear.

    Great setup
    Joseph Trumbo (Utah) | July 21st, 2020
I bought this setup as an intro to fly fishing after many hours of research. I had a friend who also had this identical set up purchased a year ago. Pleased to say that I really love this rod. I’ve caught a lot of trout in the Utah rivers with it. Nothing but positive feedback here. You will enjoy this.

    Update to first review
    Trey (Colorado) | July 2nd, 2020
I stand by the 5 star rating. I have had this rod since about the beginning of April 2020. I fished a lot on rivers at first to no avail. But caught my first crappie on a small pond. Ever since, I have caught fish every time I go out. It is great for a beginner looking to fish on the river or still-water. If you want to cast heavier flies, I would reccomend getting a heavier weight rod. This is a good rod for river or still-water fishing without a lot of brush or overhang. If you want a rod for small streams or small rivers, I would go with a smaller weight and length. But as a first, I am impressed. Thank you, Orvis and Reelflyrod for this purchase!

    Great first buy
    Trey (CO) | April 16th, 2020
It is exactly what I needed. And the reel came loaded with backing, flyline and leader ready to go. The flyline and the leader are what was given with the outfit. I do not know the quality of these things as I have just started fly fishing. I have already lost about 4 flies. Now this could be user error as I bought a 4x tippet for river trout fishing and I did not realize I needed to wet my knots. I also practiced casting in the street outside my house and damaged my flyline right where the weld is at on the flyline. So newbie mistakes. I like repairing stuff myself anyways. Aside from the newbie mistakes, I am heavily satisfied.
