The Mad River is currently in great shape. The recent rains raised water levels up to a great CFS flow, while the later evening hatches have been the better option to chase. For the local anglers, your best fishing times are in the the early morning 6 til around 10:30. This is a great time to swing small soft hackles in the tailouts and the deeper runs. Once the sunlight comes out, try to focus on terrestrials underneath the branches and shady spots. We are doing well mostly with deep nymphing in the pools or this soft hackle swing.
In the evening, try to get your spot around 6:30/7 range and the late caddis hatch should allow for some fun. Once the conditions darken, we had success on smaller streamers, soft hackle, larger caddis, and a regular sulphur pattern. You will find a ton of different bugs hatching and it is tough to dial in. With the upcoming forecast, the water should get clear and in this case, make sure to find the deeper more oxygenated runs and pools. Have a great weekend.
