The hot summer evenings are starting to cool off. The early morning Trico hatch is still prevalent in the upper stretches of the Mad River. Tie on some size 20-22 tricos both duns and emergers. A small frenchie will work perfect as a dropper. BWO's have been emerging out of the surface around the mid morning on the cloudier days. Local anglers are having success with olive and white smaller streamers in the deeper pools in the mornings as well. The cooler days will get the browns moving again for the spawn.
The Mad River CFS is around 140 and the water clarity is very clear. With the recent rains, the water levels are great and the tailouts/pools should be the places to target. The afternoon to evening hatch has been mostly caddis in pattern. Look to pair an elk hair or winged caddis dry with a caddis pupa or emerger pattern. Using fluorocarbon and longer dropper rigs should help with the clear water.
Enjoy the weekend. We are fully stocked with all types of caddis patterns in dries, nymphs and emergers. We will be open 8-2pm this Saturday.
